About Prairie View UMC

How we became Prairie View UMC

“Where there is no vision, the people perish,” Proverbs 29: 18, was taken literally by the parishioners of four small rural United Methodist churches at Buffalo Gap, Oral, Smithwick, and Oelrichs. Each building was nearing the century mark and although each congregation had done their best with maintenance, there just reached a point when the churches were no longer viable. The four merged into one congregation in March 2009, and built a new, centrally located worship center called Prairie View United Methodist Church. After many donations and much work by the parishioners, the church building was paid off in December 2010, eight months after the first service was held.

The first services were held on April 4, 2010—Easter Sunday. That service came with a surprise; the electricity conked out before church started and with that went the possibility of coffee and breakfast. As the trustees scrambled to get the power back on, Pastor Ed Coates went on with the service. As he reached a crescendo in his sermon and emphatically said, “Hallelujah!” the lights came on. Parishioners mentioned it was one memorable Easter service.

In 2015, Prairie View purchased a parsonage and within a year, it was paid for.

The church is really the people and many of them have time and talents to share.

Let’s build something together.

Prairie View’s Bell Garden

The congregation of Prairie View created our Bell Garden to never forget were it all started from. Each Bell from the original four churches were transplanted into a bell garden complete with benches also various flowers and shrubs. All are welcome to come join in on the gardening.
